Makkoli instructions
I just got done bottling my Mak, and it came out great! Here's the breakdown:
4 lbs. of rice (I used half/half blend of 2lbs short grain glutinous and 2lbs of medium calrose)
1gal water
4tsp of amylase enzyme
1/4 cup wheat dme
3/4 cup lactose
Lalvin K1-V1116 yeast
Soaked the rice for about 2 hours, then dumped into my rice cooker with an additional cup of water, and let it cook. After cooked, I stuck in the refridgerator.
In the meantime, I boiled 1 cup of water and added my wheat dme and lactose and stirred until dissolved, then let cool to about 130 degrees. I dumped the syrup into a 2-gal bucket, and added the amylase enzyme. Once cooled, I added the rice and water, then stirred it all together with a power drill and stirrer attachment. Rehydrated yeast, then dumped into mixure. Cover with airlock, then let it ferment for 7 days (stirring about twice per day for the first four days, then once the fifth and sixth day). Congrats! You've just made Dong Dong Ju!
Make sure you have a good quality strainer, and above all else, sanitize sanitize sanitize. Hands, equipment, straining bag, etc.
Strain the rice wine through the strainer into a bottling bucket or another bucket, swirling in the strainer with your hand to get as much liquid loose as possible, then dump the leftover rice into a separate bucket. Continue process until you get to the yeast/rice sediment at the bottom (it will be the last 1/2 inch or so). Discard that portion.
Next, take the rice that was collected, and scoop into a straining bag (I used an extra muslin bag I had lying around). Squeeze the rice into the bottling bucket until no more liquid escapes, and repeat process until all rice is used. If you want to keep it at the strength it is (which will be around 15-16% alcohol), bottle as is. This is Dong Dong Ju. To make Makgeolli, read on.
After the first straining, mix the leftover rice with a little more water (to get it rehydrated) and repeat the straining process. You will do this about three times.
Once all the straining is done, discard all the rice. At this point, the makgeolli is done. You can use as is (it'll be somewhat sweet from the addition of the lactose), or sweeten it more with lactose or another unfermentable sugar at this point. Bottle, and stick in the fridge.
To serve, shake bottle up, pour, and enjoy!

HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Monitor or TV is Blank after Starting the Computer
This document pertains to HP and Compaq desktop computers.
This document is about troubleshooting a video connection from a monitor (or a TV being used an a monitor) to a personal computer. If you have a computer that has the monitor built-in, such as a HP or Compaq All-in-One PC or HP TouchSmart PC , see Screen is Blank after Starting the Computer .
This document will help you determine if the blank screen is being caused by the computer hardware, the video signal to the monitor, or the monitor itself.
Before you begin
Check the following items before using the steps in this document:
Make sure the monitor has power and the power light comes on when the power button is pressed. If the light on the monitor remains off, the monitor is not receiving power from either the wall outlet or the power adapter.
If you have a flat panel LCD monitor, unplug the monitor power cable, wait about 30 seconds, reconnect the cable and then turn on the monitor. This resets the electronics on the monitor.
If the monitor has a detachable video cable, obtain a second monitor cable for testing purposes in case the cable is bad.
Disconnect all connected devices except the mouse, keyboard, and monitor. This includes removing thumb drives and camera-type memory cards from card reader slots.
Step 1: Listen to the computer and look at the lights
To help determine if the problem is being caused by the computer, turn on the computer and listen to it. Look at the computer's lights. What do you notice?
If the computer is make a beeping sound when turned on, a card, cable, memory module, or processor inside the computer may have came loose. Go to Reseat loose internal components to check for loose components.
Do you hear the computer's fans spinning? If you do not hear noise from the fans and the power lights on the computer are not on, the problem is related to the computer, not the monitor. To continue troubleshooting a computer that does not start, select your operating system below:
Windows 7
Windows Vista
Windows XP, Me, or 98
If you can hear the computer's fan spin and see lights on the computer, the problem is probably caused by the video cable connection or the monitor. Continue to the next step.
Step 2: Connect the computer to another monitor
Connect another monitor to the computer to determine which device has the problem (the monitor or the computer). If you do not have an extra monitor, temporarily connect the computer to a friend's monitor for troubleshooting purposes.
After the monitor is connected, turn on the computer and the monitor. What happens?
If the newly attached monitor does not display anything , disconnect the cable and continue at Step 3: Inspect the video cable and video connectors for damage
If the newly attached monitor displays the first startup screen(s) but then goes black, there is a problem with Windows starting. Skip to Step 5: Change the display resolution .
If the new monitor works , the original monitor or its cables are faulty. Do the following:
Replace the monitor power cable.
Turn on the monitor. If the monitor displays an image, you are done. If the monitor remains blank, continue using these steps.
Replace the video cable.
Turn on the monitor. If the monitor displays an image, you are done. If the monitor remains blank, continue using these steps.
If the monitor does not work after replacing the cables, replace or service the monitor.
Step 3: Inspect the video cable and video connectors for damage
Inspect the video cable and video connectors for damage. Check for sharp bends or breaks in the cable, or bent or broken pins at the connectors. With the monitor and computer off, try to straighten bent pins with a small metal tube, like the tip of an empty mechanical pencil or the tip of a retracted pen.
Figure 1: Video connector
If you had to straighten any pins, reconnect the monitor making sure that the video cable is firmly connected and then turn on the computer and monitor. If the display is still blank, continue to the next step.
Step 4: Reset and update the BIOS
You can use these steps even though you will not be able to see anything on the monitor.
In case an item was changed in the BIOS, such as the primary display device setting, use one of the following sections to reset the BIOS back to its default configuration:
Reset BIOS Version 7 or greater
Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F10 key for eight seconds.
Press the Down arrow three times.
Press the Enter key two times.
Restart the computer.
Reset BIOS Version 6 or less
Turn on the computer and repeatedly press one of the following keyboard keys. Press the key about once every second for 5 seconds after turning the computer on.
For HP and Compaq computers that came with Windows 7 or Windows Vista, press F10 .
For HP and Compaq computers that came with Windows XP, press F1 .
For Compaq Presario desktop computers built prior to 2002, press F10 .
Wait another 5 seconds.
Press the F5 key. This restores the default settings of the BIOS.
Press the Enter key. This accepts the changes.
Press the F10 key. This saves the changes.
Press the Enter key. This saves the changes and exits from the BIOS.
The monitor should display the first screens received from the computer (the logo screens). If not, find and download the latest BIOS update if one is available for your computer.
If a BIOS update was not available or the monitor is still blank, continue to the next step.
Step 5: Reseat loose internal components
If the computer case was recently serviced or moved, a card, cable, memory module, or processor may have become loose. When this happens, the computer might make a beeping sound when turned on. Use the following steps to check for loose components:
Check for loose components
WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.
WARNING: The edges of metal panels can cut skin. Be careful not to slide skin along any interior metal edge of the computer.
Unplug all cables except for the power. Write down each cable location if you do not already know where it connects.
With the power cable removed press the Power button on the front of the computer for 5 seconds.
Remove the screw(s) that retain the panel or cover from the rear of the computer.
Slide the side panel off from the rear of the computer.
Gently press down on the outside edges of cards and memory modules that are inserted into the motherboard to better seat them. Do not press too hard.
Gently press down on the connectors of the flat ribbon cables to seat them.
Replace the side panel and screw(s), reconnect the computer cables, and turn on the computer.
If the monitor still displays a black screen, the video hardware may be faulty and needs to be replaced or serviced. If the monitor displays the first startup screen but does not display Windows, continue to the next step.
Step 6: Change the display resolution
This step will not work if you cannot view the first startup screens as noted in the previous section.
Use the following steps to change to a compatible display resolution and color depth setting from a standard graphics mode. For flat panel LCD monitors, set the display resolution to the monitor's native display resolution.
NOTE: Connect the computer to a working monitor to perform these steps.
NOTE: If you cannot select your monitor's native display resolution, then update the computer's video drivers and repeat this step.
Turn on the computer and press the F8 key repeatedly when the first startup screen appears.
Increase the display resolution as follows.
Windows 7
If you are using Windows 7 , select Enable low-resolution video (640 x480) , press Enter , and wait until Windows opens. Change the display resolution to match the default setting for the monitor.

Convert spare computer into a file server
A home or small office can set up a single computer as a file server to share files between all the computers used on the network. You can use this file server to keep large amounts of data and later access them through a different computer. You can share applications or devices like the printer with everyone who connects to the file server in the home or small office.
· Look for an extra PC. Find an extra computer in your home that you could use as the file server. It does not necessarily have to be new one, but it has to be running and reliable, since you might want to have it powered up for most of the day when people are using computers in your home or small office. The computer must have an operating system and a big enough hard drive to store various types of data. When you find an extra computer, set up the operating system and install programs you may need. Connect the computer to a router, or directly to one of the slots on a wireless router.
· Configure Network Setup Wizard. In this example we will be working with the Windows XP operating system. Go to the Start button on your taskbar and select the Control Panel. At the Control Panel window click the Network Setup Wizard. When you have opened the Network Setup Wizard, click the Next button twice until you reach the "This computer connects to the Internet through a residential gateway or through another computer on my network" option. Select this option then click the Next button. Type a description for the file server, then click the Next button. Pick a name to use for Workgroup Name, then click the Next button. On the next configuration window choose the option "Turn on file and printer sharing" and then click the Next button until you see the "Just finish the Wizard" option. Click the option and exit the Network Setup Wizard.
· Set up folder for sharing. You need to make a new folder on your desktop to be shared across your network. This is where other computers can access the shared files. On your desktop, right-click on a blank space, and then select New then Folder to create a new folder on the desktop. Rename the folder, then right-click the folder you created and select the Sharing and Security option. In the Sharing and Security window put a check on "Share this folder on the network" and a check on "Allow network users to change my files" then click OK.
· Configure Map Network Drive. For every computer that will gain access to the file server, you need to configure the Map Network Drive. To do this, go to the Start menu then right-click the My Computer option and select on the Map Network Drive option. You will now be asked to select a drive letter for the Shared folder. Choose a letter then browse for the shared folder you created on the file server computer, then click the OK button.
You can now access the shared folder on the file server through a different computer. You can also save files in the shared folder directly through your various programs like Word or Excel.
Quick Tips:
· Make sure all the computers in your network will have the same Workgroup name.

Pickled ginger pear recipe

SUZI'S GINGER PEAR PICKLES
This is an expensive dish to make, but you can make it a little less pricy if you purchase some of the more costly ingredients from BulkFoods.com . If you don't want to buy online, it'll cost a little more to make, but I think you'll still find it's well worth the effort!
This recipe makes about 3 quarts of product. The ingredients alone probably cost about $3.00 per quart when purchased from your local grocer.
1. Quarter, peel & core about 15 firm medium pears into a large bowl (I used a Tupperware that I could cover to protect from fruit flies. You might want to stick the bowl into the fridge while you prepare the syrup)
2. Measure the following ingredients into a large cooking pot:
o 5 cups sugar
o 3 cups white vinegar
o 1 cup apple juice
o 1 cup water
o 1 cup well-washed, peeled & thinly-sliced fresh ginger (reserve peel)
3. Add a quart of water & 2 tbsp white vinegar to the pears & set them aside to soak for about 10 minutes.
4. Begin to heat the syrup mixture while the pears soak & you prepare the spice bag.
5. Place a square of cheese cloth (3 layers) in a smaller bowl, then put the following ingredients into the center of the cheesecloth square:
o The reserved ginger peel
o 2 limes, thinly sliced
o 6 cinnamon sticks
o 1/4 cup whole cloves
6. Tie the spice bag shut, then
7. Turn the burner to high & bring the syrup to a boil
8. Add the spice bag to the boiling syrup, cover the pot, & continue to boil the mixture for about 8-10 minutes.
9. Drain the pears well & add them to the boiling mixture; continue to boil until the pears are translucent (about 10 minutes).
10. Remove pears & syrup to a bowl to cool a little (if you're preparing to serve them all in the next few weeks) * , then cover & cool thoroughy before serving.
11. * You can store this dish in the fridge for up to 3 weeks, or you might want to can some of them for use over the next year or so. If you're going to can part of the batch, don't cool them but remove them straight to prepared canning jars. I recommend canning in wide-mouth pint jars, processing for 20 minutes in hot-water bath.

Marcus Tullius Cicero 106-43BC
"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance"
— Marcus Tullius Cicero

Lincoln Quote
Let not him who is houseless pull down the house of another, but let him work diligently and build one for himself, thus by example assuring that his own shall be safe from violence when built. - Abe Lincoln
